Mercedes-Benz EQS gets spotted out in the open

The Mercedes-Benz EQS, company’s all-electric flagship based on the Modular Electric Architecture (MEA), has been photographed during road tests. Overall, the car looks a bit like the Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA, although smaller details cannot be seen on the spy shots.

Our impression from the photos made available so far is that the car is a liftback with frameless doors and pull-out door handles. Once the model hits the market, it will mainly have to fight against the Porsche Taycan, the Audi e-tron GT and the (smaller-sized) BMW i4 for customers’ wallets. That, and an all-electric Audi A9 might get released into the same market niche later on.

The EQS is generally expected to have a level floor with a large traction battery hidden underneath, and two motors mounted one per each axle. Its performance will likely exceed the 408 hp / 304 kW of the EQC SUV.

The international premiere of the Mercedes-Benz EQS will likely not happen until 2021. The company will be unveiling the new S-Class next year, though, complete with the new multimedia system, autopilot and other tech features that the EQS will also ship with.
