Garrett Motion Inc. has come up with an innovative development in automotive turbocharger industry, one that could enable vendors to produce models revving up to 170,000 RPM.
The same know-how could be used to design high-performance electric motors resistant to high operating temperatures. The company claims it already has the necessary software for this motor design.
The electromechanical Garrett E-Turbo unit should make its market debut soon, and range-topping Mercedes-AMG vehicles will be the first to benefit from it, the announcement states.
Garrett says that a dozen innovative technologies will emerge in the near future that will enable the creation of much more nature-friendly hybrid engines than the ones used today. One of these technologies enables highly efficient regeneration of power, greatly extending the range available from a single charge.
