In the modern world, technologies evolve faster than ever before, and even the normally conservative automotive industry has to move with the times. In recognition of the fact, Mercedes has taken its latest Mercedes-Maybach prototype out on a trip along German roads specifically to test Digital Light – an adjustable road illumination feature.
Digital Light dynamically changes the brightness of a car’s headlights depending on driving conditions. To that end, each headlamp comes equipped with a digital chip and lots of tiny mirrors. Upon receiving sensor data suggesting that full-scale illumination is not necessary, some of these mirrors may turn off, thus optimizing the light spot ahead of the moving vehicle.
The company plans to install digital Light on all mass-market Mercedes-Benz S-Class cars of the next generation. The first such car should roll off the assembly line in 2020.
