Mercedes-AMG has acquired ownership rights for a racing circuit in South Korea. The newly established AMG Speedway has already been tested by GT and Project One supercars.
The circuit itself was opened in 1995. In 2017, the German performance car manufacturer has negotiated its renaming to ‘AMG Speedway’ with the appropriate transfer of rights.
The track is over four kilometers (2.5 mi) long and has 17 turns. Prior to the opening, the new owner replaced the team boxes and the paddock with new ones, added another recreation area and put out numerous AMG banners. A new race drivers’ school will open there soon as well.
The race track and the school should both serve to raise the popularity of the Mercedes-AMG brand in South Korea, which it lists among its most important markets.
The first vehicle to enter the Speedway was Project One, a hypercar worth €2,300,000. The vehicle packs a 1,000-horsepower (~750 kW) powertrain consisting of a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and five electric motors partnered with an eight-speed DCT box.
