Mercedes-Benz opens a factory in France

Great news for the French: production of a new compact Mercedes-Benz EV will be starting in a few days in the company’s recently opened works in Hambach, France.

The German automobile manufacturer has invested over €500,000,000 into the remodeling and upgrading of the existing industrial facilities. Daimler AG refused to name the exact car model, but everything points to the fact that it’s going to be the Mercedes-Benz EQA. The vehicle debuted at the last year’s Frankfurt International Motor Show with an approximate production launch date somewhere in 2019.

The Mercedes-Benz EQA Concept came equipped with dual electric engines together producing 270+ hp (200+ kW). Connected to a 60 kWh traction battery, these offer around 400 km (250 mi) in terms of driving range.

During the presentation event, many visitors were baffled by optical fiber lasers hidden in the car’s headlights and bearing a suspicious resemblance to the copper-wire motor winding. They were also impressed by a holographic radiator grille that could change its appearance based on the drive mode selected. It is uncertain whether any of these features will reach mass production, though.
