Elderly Mercedes-Benz A 160 set to sell for more than new

This 22-year-old A-Class can be yours for €44,900, a sizeable premium over the latest-gen hatchback priced from €32,094 new in Germany. What’s the catch?

The catch is, the compact car belongs to the Edition Häkkinen series dedicated to famous Formula One driver Mika Häkkinen. Only 125 units was made and given the iconic Mercedes-McLaren livery along with ‘Häkkinen’ captions on the side sills and a flag of Finland on the front door. Elsewhere, the car has twin tailpipes and 17-inch AMG rims clad in low-profile tires.

The interior makes use of red leather and is trimmed to the max. The suspension benefits from sportier components, but the engine stays stock. In the case of the A 160, it is a 1.6-liter mill mated to a five-speed, single-clutch transmission for 102 PS (100 hp / 75 kW) and 110 Nm (110 lb-ft) of torque.

Having served as a show car until it made it into a private collection, the A 160 has mere 215 kilometers (133 miles) on the odometer. Its current location is in Italy.

In the same year as this special edition, Mercedes produced another 125 special cars dedicated to David Coulthard. The two limited series were identical except for the driver’s last name on the sills.
