Mercedes-AMG to reuse A 45 / CLA 45 engine for larger cars

The new Mercedes-AMG А 45 and CLA 45 compacts, which you can see in our gallery here, benefit from a new engine design that yields 421 PS (415 hp / 309 kW) from just two liters of displacement, making them the fastest and the strongest in their niche. Today, the company announced it would be reusing the same design in larger cars.

Speaking in an interview, a Mercedes-AMG representative said the motor was quite suitable for use in RWD vehicles. Given the overall trend towards electrification, the high-yield unit may later become the staple of hybrid powertrains of the 43 and 53 series. In their current implementation, both the 43 and 53 are ‘mild’ hybrids based on six-cylinder gas engines.

Larger Mercedes-AMG vehicles may also take advantage of this engine model later on, but this remains to be seen. The 63 range will not drop below 600 hp (447 kW), which means it might go all-electric, rather than hybrid.
