The Golf R drives its wheels with 320 PS (316 hp / 235 kW) and 420 Nm through a seven-speed semi-automatic transmission. It has a weight advantage of 100 kg (220 lbs) over its rival and costs mere two-thirds of its price at £39,300.
The Mercedes-AMG A 45 S is no slouch, however, with its 421 PS (415 hp / 310 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) delivered to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is also much more expensive at £57,200 and above.
