Mercedes has confirmed plans to make its next-generation AMG GT supercar a hybrid vehicle. The premiere is scheduled for 2022.
The new GT will arrive packing Mercedes’ signature four-liter, twin-turbo V8 alongside an electric motor. Unofficial sources claim the resulting output of the system will amount to 659 PS (650 hp, 485 kW). This is 20 PS / 20 hp / 15 kW more than what the company’s best performer, the 63 S 4MATIC+, has at its disposal (see gallery and video for an overview of the flagship).
Mercedes also promises superb torque in this new model, since it will be based on an all-new EV platform that incorporates a 48V power network and a starter-generator. While by no means official at this point, torque estimations lie close to the 950 Nm (708 lb-ft) mark.
In its next iteration, the Mercedes-AMG GT will also take advantage of a sophisticated AWD system that will be able to distribute the power and torque on per-wheel basis automatically. The Drift Mode will continue to be available.
