New Mercedes-AMG SL to phase out the GT Roadster

Mercedes-AMG CEO Philipp Schiemer has officially confirmed that the company is wrapping up production of the open-top AMG GT, leaving only the coupe and the sedan in the lineup.

With the next-gen AMG SL right around the corner, the marque wants to avoid cannibalizing its own sales by introducing a second soft-top model. The SL looks more viable on the whole thanks to its modern tech, all-wheel drive and hybrid powertrains.

The company also points out that, while the new SL still holds its status as a comfortable ride for long road trips, it feel different to drive thanks to being designed by the AMG subdivision from the ground up.

Only one thing is known about the powertrains: specifically, the roadster will ship with certain new engines no other AMG vehicle has yet. The old 800-HP hybrid system will not be available, because something different is coming to replace it.

In other news, Mercedes-AMG restated that it would not be designing any high-end supercars like the Mercedes-AMG One anytime soon. Some of the new vehicles will be PHEVs and BEVs, but select models will be allowed to keep their gasoline engines assisted by starter-generators.
