It was official that the upcoming new Mercedes-AMG SL would send the AMG GT Roadster to its retirement, but we are now receiving reports that the coupe version of the AMG GT may also go discontinued until the end of 2021.
Apparently, you can no longer place an order for an AMG GT Coupe on the manufacturer’s website. It remains open whether the SL Roadster would have a coupe-shaped counterpart to fill in the gap.
The AMG GT Coupe came out in 2014, and the open-top version followed two years later. There were multiple modifications powered by the same four-liter V8 engine. In 2020, the range-topping Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series debuted with 730 PS (720 hp / 537 kW) under the hood. It proceeded to set a North Loop record among production cars.
Mercedes is determined to shrink its two-door sports car lineup, so a comeback of the GT Coupe seems unlikely at this time. In fact, rumors have persisted for a while that even the C- and E-Class coupes and convertibles would eventually be replaced with a single new model.
