Mercedes-AMG GT R has been elected to perform the functions of a safety car during this year’s Formula One Championship, thus becoming the fastest F1 safety vehicle in history.
The German automaker had to make some profound changes in the design of the original model for it to be granted admission to the race. Among other things, the Mercedes-AMG GT R safety car features a roll cage, carbon-ceramic brakes, a roof-mounted light bar, and an appropriate livery.
On the inside, one’s attention is immediately drawn to two iPads serving as a means of radio communication between the safety car crew and the race hosting party. These can also be used to quickly locate any of the racecars on the track.
In its stock version, the Mercedes-AMG GT R supercar comes equipped with a four-liter V8 engine good for 585hp and 700 Nm of torque. It darts to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.6 seconds and doesn’t hit the speed ceiling until 318 km/h (197.5 mph).
