Several months after proclaiming the Porsche Panamera the fastest-going production car of the North Loop, the track masters will have to revoke that title in favor of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4-Door Coupé.
A Panamera Turbo S hit the asphalt in late July, packing 630 PS (621 hp / 463 kW) and covering the entire 20.83km (12.9-mile) long track in 7 minutes 29.81 seconds. The Mercedes team promised to reclaim the title back then – and it stayed true to its promise.
A production-issue AMG GT 63 S lapped up the ‘Ring in 7:27.8 powered by its stock 4.0-liter V8 TT rated at 639 PS (630 hp / 470 kW). It had a nine-speed automatic transmission and an AWD system to help deliver that power to the ground. The only deviations from the stock equipment (allowed by the rules) included Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and a custom-tailored AMG aerodynamic kit.
