Mercedes-Benz did bring a pre-production example of its much-anticipated, F1-engined One hypercar to the Munich Motor Show, but it never revealed the launch date. Now, AutoEvolution suggests that the engineers still have technical issues to overcome before it can ship.
The Mercedes-AMG One comes based on a racecar engine with six cylinders and 1.6 liters of displacement, which debuted on a Formula One racer four years ago. Multiple electric motors assist it for an estimated total output of 1,000 horsepower (750 kilowatts).
The freshly encountered difficulty allegedly arises from strict noise pollution standards in Europe. While not official, sources have been reporting that the AMG One is simply too loud to be street-legal at this moment.
The original Project One Concept made its debut four years ago and had been set to turn into a production hypercar in 2018. Various engineering challenges forced Mercedes to postpone production several times in a row. The V6 proved exceedingly difficult to keep stable at lower RPMs, required a very special and finely tuned eight-speed transmission, and degraded too fast to be viable in a road car.
Last time we heard, Mercedes was still planning on unveiling the final production car at the end of the current year.
