Mercedes-AMG One gets delayed yet again

Mercedes-AMG brought its Project One concept car to the Frankfurt Motor Show four years ago, claiming it was ‘close to production.’ The production never followed, despite the entire 275 units sold out through pre-orders, and the prospects of the supercar are as hazy as ever.

The company had to postpone production multiple times already, and the schedule was revised yet again this week. Barring any other unforeseen circumstances, we should finally be able to see the AMG One on the streets in the first quarter of 2022.

In all likelihood, the issue lies in the highly experimental powertrain of the car, which has already spawned countless challenges for the AMG engineering team. The Formula One engine used as a part of a hybrid system was extremely difficult to make viable in a street supercar. Issues were determined and fixed one by one, but several months ago, a spy video cropped up online showing an AMG One test vehicle dead on track with an engine failure.

The company also mentioned problems with noise levels and all-electric driving mode. The exterior design of the car has also evolved in the four years since announcement. AMG remains positive that, if the One ever makes it into production, it will be taken to the North Loop for a record-breaking run.
