In order to trim down its range and prevent cannibalization of sales, Mercedes-Benz has discontinued the SLC compact roadster, and will soon get rid of the C- & E-Class coupes, too. A new model named the CLE is coming to fill in the gaps.
According to Development Team Manager Markus Schaefer, two-door models aren’t lucrative for the company, but they are essential from the image standpoint. With this in mind, the carmaker will reduce the number of coupes in its lineup, but never ditch them altogether like some others did.
The CLE is a soft-top, four-seat convertible based on the new C-Class platform and mostly turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Inline-sixes are also possible, but only in select specifications.
The premiere should take place in two years’ time. The company intends to launch the new SL-Class ahead of that, changing its body type from roadster (see video) to convertible. The new SL will get AWD for the first time on record and will also serve as a replacement for multiple older models, such as the S-Class Coupe.
