Video: This is what tuners could do 27 years ago

In 1992, Mariani released bespoke versions of the Mercedes E-Class 300 T (W124) sedan/saloon, its coupe counterpart, and the BMW 5 Series (E34). Let us see what car tuning meant almost three decades ago, shall we?

Both Mercedes rides gained the same SEC radiator grille, elegant hood and trunk covers, seamless metallic fender flares, robust-looking five-spoke wheels, a sports exhaust system, and revised stance. Nowadays, something like this would warrant a definition like ‘complete makeover’, but Mariani was humble enough to call it ‘styling’.

For an extra fee, customers could order a cabin overhaul and/or an engine upgrade with all the necessary admission certificates.

As for the BMW 5 Series (E34), the executive sedan received 17-inch wheels, a custom trunk lid, a lowering kit for a 65mm (2.54”) reduction in ride height, a sports exhaust system, and a luxurious cabin trim with a hi-fi audio and a telephone.

Not bad at all for 1992, don’t you think?
