Mercedes reveals the all-electric EQS liftback in first photos

Following the reveal of the facelifted E-Class sedan/saloon range, the German premium carmaker has rewarded us with a glimpse of its upcoming electric flagship: the EQS.

The car still wears a disguising wrap and is shown sitting next to the EQS Concept revealed last year (watch the video for more). Compared to the gas-powered S-Class, the EQS boasts an ever larger wheelbase and much shorter hood.

Given that Mercedes has designed the electric EQC based on the GLC SUV platform and will be releasing the battery-powered EQA based on the GLA, many expected the GLS to follow suit and borrow the chassis from the S-Class. This is not the case at all, though. The liftback takes advantage of Modular Electric Architecture (MEA), a brand-new development that ensures maximum interior space and completely even floor without the transmission tunnel.

The specs of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQS remain unannounced, but most assume that it will ship with dual electric motors (one per axle) and bring around 400 hp (300 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) to the table. Its range will lie in the 400 – 550 kilometer area (250 – 342 miles).

The premiere date has also not been set yet, but we expect it to be later this year. The production will take place at the same Sindelfingen factory where the current S-Class is being produced.
