Daimler AG has just applied for the ‘E 73’ trademark, which must be what a new Mercedes-Benz E-Class flagship will be called.
A year and a half ago, Tobias Moers – who was the Mercedes-AMG CEO back in the day – let it slip that a part-electric AMG GT 4-door Coupe was in development. A hybrid car called the GT 73 e has recently showed up at a premiere of an AMG racer.
Daimler AG already holds the rights to such names as the GT 73 e, G 73 e, S 73 e, and SL 73 e, the letter ‘e’ standing for ‘e-Performance Hybrid System’. However, the E 73 registered just now lacks this suffix. What could it mean?
The AMG GT sedan shares the platform with the current E-Class, so transplanting the powertrain from one into another should be possible. The power will be close to 800 PS (789 hp / 588 kW).
Aston Martin DBX is another entry scheduled to receive the 4.0-liter Mercedes V8 assisted by an electric motor, although it remains to be seen whether such an SUV will come out or not.
The GT 73 e should debut later this spring, and we expect the new E-Class flagship to follow soon.
