Mercedes-Benz has revealed two new E-Class vehicles – an all-wheel-driven sedan and an estate car – both of which now get the suffix ‘53’ to their names to denote the hybrid powertrain.
Both the sedan and estate modifications of the Mercedes-AMG E 53 come equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 engine assisted with a turbocharger and an electric supercharger. The resulting combination can produce up to 430 hp (320 kW) and 520 Nm (384 lb·ft) of torque. When accelerating fast, the vehicle also uses its EQ Boost starter-generator unit that draws electricity from its on-board power system. It relies on a nine-speed automatic transmission for gear switching.
The new Mercedes-AMG E 53 can accelerate to a maximum of 250 km/h (155 mph). Those willing to spend extra for the Driver’s Package may expect a boost to 270 km/h (168 mph). Both the sedan and the estate car need less than 5 seconds to get going at 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill.
Main features include electronically-controlled shock absorption, air suspension and 4-piston brakes. On the inside, there is an infotainment system with a 12-inch screen, an analogue clock, and ventilated massage seats.
First cars will roll into dealerships in Germany somewhere this summer, priced at €79,000 and above.
