A new turbocharged inline 6 diesel engine will be available in the next generation of the Mercedes G-Class cars starting in spring 2019.
The 2.9-liter unit is compliant with the SCR exhaust neutralization standard and outputs up to 286 hp (213 kW) and 600 Nm of torque (443 lbft), the latter obtainable at 1,200 RPM. To compare, the old diesel engine could only produce 245 hp (183 kW) in the G350d trim, with the maximum torque unlocked at 1,600 RPM.
Driven by the new engine coupled with a nine-speed automatic transmission, the car only needs 7.4 seconds to sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) and can eventually reach 200 km/h (124 mph).
On the whole, the new Mercedes G350d will be roughly equal to its gasoline-powered counterparts in terms of raw performance while at the same time being considerably cheaper. Prices will be announced in early 2019.
