Mercedes-Benz officially confirms G-Class EV

Rumors that the iconic G-Wagon would eventually get a purely electric version were not unfounded, after all. Daimler AG CEO Ola Callenius personally confirmed that the car is in the works.

The designers have already come up with the first sketches (unfortunately, these haven’t been made public yet), and the engineering crew is busy constructing the first test prototype. Just when to expect the electric G-Class to come out remains unknown, but ‘within the next few years’ seems to be a reliable enough estimation.

Callenius added that the G-Wagon ‘breaks the logic of the entire industry’ and ‘doesn’t fit into any of the existing market segments.’ Despite this, the model grows more popular by the day. With around 35,000 units sold in 2019, the growth amounted to a whopping 60%. It looks as if the company wanted to keep the conceptually outdated off-roader in the lineup by making it purely electric and tech-heavy.
