It looks like the rumors about an impending electric version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class were true, after all: the automaker has applied for a trademark named “EQG”.
The application requests two model names: EQG 560 and EQG 580. No other details are known at this time, although we expect things to clear up with the premiere next year.
The first rumors that the G-Wagon would soon roll all-electric emerged in November 2019. Then-CEO Ola Källenius said the G-Class would hold onto its internal combustion engines for longer than all other models. It looks like the trend towards inevitable and complete electrification forced Mercedes-Benz to speed up the process and make sure the iconic SUV stays in production.
The company plans to unveil at least two other EVs later this year. A flagship called EQS will debut this summer in two trim versions, and an electric SUV dubbed EQA will finally debut in the fall (we had seen it testing since 2020).
