Enter the Mercedes-Benz EQG, a G-Class running on battery power

Mercedes-Benz has arrived at the IAA Mobility Expo in Munich with conceptual sketches of a fully electric G-Class that it claims is ‘very close to production’.

The car retains its signature body-on-frame construction, solid beam axle at the rear, and per-wheel suspension at the front. It uses quad electric motors mounted ‘next to the wheels’ to propel itself forward. Power, acceleration and range aren’t discussed this early on.

The car manufacturer believes that the EQG will surpass the traditional G-Wagon in terms of off-road performance. To that end, the company will be putting it through the same series of severe tests on the Graz Proving Grounds as the regular G-Class.

The boxy exterior of the iconic SUV stays recognizable, but there are modern touches as well. Note the black panel with a LED pattern on it replacing the front grille in the same way it does on other Mercedes-EQ vehicles. At the rear end, there is a box for a charging cable and miscellaneous tools where a spare wheel used to be.
