Mercedes-Benz has switched three of its compacts to electric power: the GLA, the CLA 4-Door Coupe and the CLA Shooting Brake can now be purchased in a hybrid spec known as 250e.
The powertrain remains the same as in the A-Class hatchback and saloon, as well as the B-Class compact van. Specifically, it includes a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine producing 160 hp (120 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque and an electric motor contributing its own 102 hp (76 hp) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft). The duo utilizes a dual-clutch eight-speed automatic transmission and delivers up to 218 hp (163 kW) along with 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels. In terms of power, the hybrids are comparable to their gas-powered 250-series cousins while surpassing them in terms of torque.
The traction battery comes rated at 15.6 kWh in all three cases, giving you between 53 and 69 kilometers (33 – 43 miles) of all-electric range, depending on your chosen model. Driving electric limits the acceleration to 140 km/h (87 mph) max, and Mercedes-Benz claims you can drive without involving the gasoline engine 90% of the time.
The powertrain layout is significantly different in the new 250e series: the fuel tank now lies closer to the rear end of the car, and the shortened exhaust system runs inside the center tunnel.
Sales in Europe will begin later this spring.
