Mercedes has introduced its new GLE 580 SUV based on a mild-hybrid powertrain. The car will remain the single most powerful Mercedes-Benz vehicle until the GLE 63 comes to dethrone it.
The GLE 580 comes equipped with a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine rated at 483 hp (360 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb×ft) of torque. The main power unit is assisted by an EQ Boost mild-hybrid add-on that contributes 21 hp (16 kW) along with nearly 250 Nm (184 lb×ft) of its own.
The interior is standard GLE fare. There is a huge touch-enabled display serving simultaneously as a digital instrument panel and an infotainment screen. Options include several new interior trim schemes to choose from, AMG components, and new 22-inch wheels.
It will not be long before the GLE 580 loses its status as the strongest Mercedes on the lineup, though. The AMG GLE 63 will hit the market soon, armed with an engine capable of at least 550 hp (410 kW). Despite its enormous weight, the car will accelerate from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour (62 mph) in four seconds flat.
