Mercedes-Benz has released a new video following its 3rd-gen GLS luxury SUV on a test run through a scorching desert. The footage pays special attention to the way the car’s E-Active Body Control suspension (air/hydraulic) works on sandy terrain types.
As it turns out, the E-Active Body Control sources data from the on-board stereovision cameras and adjusts the suspension in accordance with the perceived landscape geometry. Among other things, it tweaks the ride height, adjusts shock absorber parameters on a per-wheel basis, prevents rolling during sharp turns, and keeps the car out of sand traps by tilting it from side to side and making it hop up in the air – quite literally so, as you may see for yourself.
By the way, Mercedes said it would be releasing the pricing and availability of the new GLS in a few days, so stay tuned!
