Rare Mercedes-Benz ML 55 gets turned into a motorized masterpiece

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV emerged in the United States two decades and a half ago as a sort of an alternative to the G-Class. It even spawned an AMG version later, which could hit 235 km/h (146 mph) in a straight line. As rare as the car is nowadays, it now gets a second life thanks to Renntech.

Tuners worked with the ML 55 specification and named the result ‘ML 60’ to reflect the increase in engine displacement. The 5.4-liter V8 got bored out to full six liters and received new forged pistons, crankshaft and connecting rods. As a result, the power went up from 347 PS (342 hp / 255 kW) to 420 PS (414 hp / 309 kW). The peak torque rose from 510 Nm (376 lb-ft) to 629 Nm (464 lb-ft).

A special exhaust system was installed to help the engine cope with the extra power, and the transmission and brakes received tweaks and improvements. The suspension ended up with adjustable shocks and coilovers that dropped ride height by 76 mm (3 inches). Renntech Monolith 19×9 alloys occupied the arches.

The interior stayed stock.
