Mercedes-AMG S 65 V12 says goodbye with the Final Edition

Mercedes-AMG only began using twin-turbo V12 engines for its models in 2012 – not long ago, however you look at it. Still, the company freely admits now that this kind of engine is essentially outdated tech. The Mercedes-AMG G 65 SUV and the SL 65 roadster are no more, and the S 65 sedan joins their ranks today with the Final Edition.

The limited series consists of just 130 cars painted black with matching exhaust pipes and bronze-tinted bumper inserts, side sill moldings and 20-inch rims for contrast.

Inside, there are carbon trim elements, while the stitching and the background lighting share the same coppery tint.

The Mercedes-AMG S 65 Final Edition comes armed with a V12 producing up to 630 hp (470 kW) and 1,000 Nm (738 lbft) of torque. It ships with virtually every option AMG has on offer, including the AMG Driver’s Package, standalone back seats and panoramic glass roof.

AMG will continue offering V12 engines in its other sub-brands. For instance, the Maybach-banded S 650 sedan/saloon and Pullman limousine will both get to keep their twelve cylinders.

AMG CEO said earlier that the company would soon begin replacing V12s found in top trims with more efficient solutions. He never provided any specifics, but industry pros mostly agreed that a twin-turbo V8 paired with an electric motor in a hybrid powertrain would be a more than adequate substitution.
