As we learned in February, Brabus was preparing a custom Mercedes-Maybach S 650 build for a Geneva premiere. The tuner gave us little in terms of specifics back then, saying the car would be called “Brabus 900” and come armed with a 900-horsepower (671-kilowatt) engine. Today, we may finally have a look at what turned out to be a much more comprehensive tuning project.
In its stock version, the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 comes with a 6.0 V12 rated at healthy 530 hp (395 kW). You’d think this would be more than adequate for most applications. However, Brabus has done the impossible when it squeezed 900 hp (671 kW) and 1,500 Nm (1,106 lbft) of torque out of the mill. We won’t delve into detailed specifications, so here is the short version.
The team has expanded the displacement room of the engine to 6.3 liters, increased the pressure generated by the turbocharger duo, replaced the fuel injectors, the pistons and numerous other components and redefined the way the engine control logic worked.
As a result, the Brabus 900 sprints 0-100 km/h in formidable 3.7 seconds and ultimately hits its artificial (!) speed limit at 350 km/h (217 mph). The company says it could do better than that if it weren’t for the lack of adequate tires on the market. The odometer conspicuously has “400 km/h” (250 mph) standing in its right-hand corner, and we tend to believe that this is what the tuned car just might be capable of, given the right conditions.
Among other things, the vehicle sports a custom-tailored body kit, a high-end Magic Body Control suspension system, a valve-based exhaust system, and a set of Monoblock M 21” forged rims proven to be adequate for the loads.
Inside, the seats, the doors and some of the dashboard wear fine mocha-tinted leather finish with black stitching. Other major additions include a sports steering wheel, adjustable seats, a Rolls-Royce-inspired “starry sky” ceiling, and a slew of on-board systems and features for safety and driving comfort.
