Following the reveal of the latest S-Class interior last week, Mercedes has shared some details concerning its engine palette.
Customers in the United States will get the S 500 main spec with all-wheel-drive, 3.0L I6 turbo, 435 hp (324 kW) and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque. An EQ Boost starter-generator will assist the main mill for another 22 hp (16 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft).
Then there will be the S 580, which will get a 4.0-liter V8 capable of 503 hp (375 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque, plus the same AWD and electric starter.
The next spec is called S 580e, and it is a plug-in hybrid based on a six-cylinder engine (367 hp, 274 kW) and an electric motor (142 hp, 106 kW). The cumulative output amounts to 500 hp (373 kW) of power and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque, while all-electric range comes close to 100 km (62 miles).
At the top of the U.S. line is the Mercedes-AMG S 63e, another PHEV rated as high as 800 hp (596 kW).
In addition to the above, clients in Europe will be able to choose between two diesel specs: S 350 d and S 400 d. The former churns out 286 hp (213 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft), and details are pending for the latter. China will be getting a four-cylinder entry-level S-Class.
