Reports are coming in that Mercedes-Benz is seriously considering establishing a whole new car class: SUL, which stands for Sport Utility Limousine. A luxury-laden sedan with SUV-like amounts of road clearance is rumored to be already in development.
The company has indeed built such a vehicle once – but only once, and even then only as a show car. The so-called Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury Concept debuted in Beijing, China a couple of years ago based on the GLS platform and tech. The EV came equipped with four electric motors joining their efforts for 750 hp (559 kW), while its 80-kWh battery granted it up to 500 kilometers (310 miles) of range. It was 5,260 mm (17.26 ft.) long, 2,110 mm (6.92 ft.) wide and 1,764 mm (5.79 ft.) tall.
Mercedes never commented on whether the Maybach Ultimate Luxury Concept might receive continuation as a production car.
