Mercedes-Maybach has come to the Geneva Motor Show with a working prototype of car LED headlights which will be adopted by all future series-produced Maybach vehicles. The first car to take advantage of the innovative headlight technology will be the next-generation Maybach S-Class which will also premiere soon.
In essence, each digital headlight assembly provides the impression of a technological masterpiece. It consists of more than 1,000,000 microscopic mirrors and is controlled by some advanced electronics which can identify objects in front of the vehicle and adjust light intensity to avoid inconveniencing other traffic participants and pedestrians.
Another interesting feature of the new headlights is that they can project images onto the road surface ahead and slightly to the side of the vehicle. This can be used, for instance, to warn other drivers that you’re about to turn or stop, or to project a traffic sign. They may also highlight a passenger crossing.
