Unveiling a hybrid-powered concept car based on the 4-Door Coupe at the Geneva Motor Show three years ago, Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers said the car would ultimately make it into production with 800+ hp (600+ kW) under the hood. The latest rumors indicate that at least two models may end up hybridized like that.
The first one belongs to the resurrected Mercedes-AMG 73 Series. The other one could be a top-spec S-Class vehicle, specifically one called Mercedes-AMG S63 EQ Performance 4Matic+.
Sources are reporting that the luxury sedan will ship with a gasoline engine (most likely the familiar 4.0L V8 TT) rated at 800 hp / 600 kW and a single electric motor adding 200 hp / 150 kW of its own. Thus, the peak capacity will lie around 800 hp (600 kW).
The rumored spec would make the next S-Class the strongest in history, and the sources say hybrid would also be the only option. Furthermore, the new S-Class might as well debut in a single spec in 2021, because the old V12 that the company used to install on the S65 has gone from the lineup and is now Maybach-exclusive. The S-Class Coupe and Convertible variants are reportedly also scheduled to leave the assembly lines.
The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which is shown on the photos and the video here, will celebrate its premiere on September 2, 2020, followed by its AMG counterpart sometime in the first half of 2021.
