We’ve seen many interesting cars come out in the last decade, but precious few ever came close to the magnificent Mercedes AMG Black Series, and especially the range-topping SL65. It actually still manages to remain the single strongest AMG vehicle ever built!
The SL65 AMG series rolled off the line equipped with a V12 engine rated at 670 hp (493 kW) and 1,000 Nm (738 lbft) of torque. Owing to the magnificent torque, the vehicle accelerated 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.8 seconds and didn’t take too long climbing to 320 km/h (200 mph).
Compared to the stock SL65, the AMG variant also shipped with a fixed roof (rather than a removable hard top), which made it 250 kilograms (550 lbs) lighter.
Despite all of the above, tuner Renntech wanted to see what the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series was truly capable of in the right hands. In the end, the engineer team managed to upgrade the output to stellar 822 hp (604 kW) and 1,356 Nm (1,000 lbft) of torque. This necessitated installing new performance brakes, reinforcing the seven-speed transmission and improving the air intake, among many other things.
Unfortunately, Renntech never bothered to mention the sprint times of the upgraded SL65. A shame, really, given that the car is now stronger than the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ…
