30-year-old Mercedes-Benz SL 500 with an A80 Supra heart goes up on sale

Powervehicles, a marketplace for importing Japanese cars into the USA, is offering a Mercedes-Benz SL 500 like no other for 2,650,000 JPY – despite the fact that its owner had around 8,000,000 JPY invested in it.

The Anthracite Grey SL-Class looks rather reserved on the outside, lacking vivid accents except maybe for the five-spoke aluminum wheels finished in bronze. The wheel model is Yokohama AVS 19”, and you wouldn’t be able to find it outside of Japan.

The suspension is lower than stock, and there is a massive muffler with a single wide exhaust pipe that also hints at the tuning. It does not tell the whole story, of course, which is way more interesting that a few aftermarket parts.

Hiding under the hood of the German car born in Japan is the legendary 2JZ Supra engine that replaces the stock naturally aspirated V8 there. Thanks to a new turbocharger, it hits six-speed manual transmission with over 600 PS (600 hp / 450 kW). It is a pity we don’t know how fast it sprints, although expectations surely are high in this regard.

The cabin contains Ferrari F355 Berlinetta-style seats, a sports steering wheel, and a couple new gauges, including one for induction pressure. The odometer has around 10,000 km (6,214 miles) on it, so the car should be almost as good as new.
