New Mercedes-AMG SL to get a particularly light body frame

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the body shell structure of the next-gen AMG SL sports car series, which will succeed both the previous-gen SL and the S-Class Coupe.

The whole unit weighs 270 kg (595 lbs) and is a brand-new design that involves compound materials, magnesium, high-tensile steel alloys, and aluminum. It consists of a space-frame and a unitized body. The company claims not a single element has been carried over from an old model.

Compared to the previous generation, the new car has 18% more torsion rigidity, as well as 50% more lateral and 40% more longitudinal stiffness than the latest Mercedes-AMG GT Convertible.

For the first time on record, the SL-Class will debut with a 2+2 seating formula. The car will not only comply to the strict governmental standards of safety, but even surpass some of these. For once, the safety bars behind the headrests will extend with lightning-fast speed in the event of tuning over.

All powertrain details will be revealed later, although it is official that the new SL will be getting an AWD system for the first time on record. If we had to guess, the company could take the powertrains for the model from the newest AMG GT.
