Mercedes-AMG GT will be available alongside the SL, company says

Mercedes-AMG intends to produce the new SL convertible and the GT coupe (featured in the gallery) side-by-side, Design Director Gordon Wagener confirmed today. Despite being technically related, the two models target different audiences.

Speaking in an interview, Wagener confirmed that the next-gen Mercedes-AMG GT shares its technological underpinnings with the recently revealed Mercedes-AMG SL. He emphasized that, while the SL could be called a fully featured sports car, it was still primarily designed for driving in a luxury environment. The GT, in contrast, could be turned into a track weapon with a single touch of a button.

He added that some owners found the GT too stiff for daily driving, while many liked its unrestrained racing capabilities. The SL is here to provide an alternative to those clients who would rather drive a comfortable sports car on a daily basis.

Nothing is known about the launch date of the new AMG GT yet. Earlier reports claimed that the current-generation coupe and roadster would go discontinued in 2021 and the next iteration would come in 2023. Those remain to be confirmed.
