Mercedes-Benz has finally disclosed the detailed information concerning the upcoming release of an all-electric Sprinter van series. Reportedly, the production of the German manufacturer’s second all-electric commercial vehicle will follow in 2019.
The new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter EV will get the same powertrain as the eVito minivan – more specifically, a 107-horsepower (80 kW) engine plus a traction battery capable of storing either 41 or 55 kilowatt-hours, depending on the chosen specification. The former will give it a maximum driving range of 115 km (72 mi), while the latter will offer 150 km (93 mi). A full charging cycle would take 8 hours (or just 45 minutes with a high-power charging station).
Remarkably, while the base model can carry up to 1,040 kilograms (2,300 lb) of goods, the hi-end one is actually only capable of 900 kilograms (1,985 lb).
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter EV is definitely not the last commercial battery car to enter the market under the Mercedes brand. The enterprise wants to build an all-electric version of its Citan compact van, among other things.
The original Sprinter van debuted in February this year. It ships in as many as 1,700 different trim combinations. Options include front, rear and all-wheel drive, numerous safety systems and electronic driver aids, and different payloads.
