Mercedes-Benz to discontinue the X-Class over low demand

Daimler AG is seriously considering dropping the Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup truck from the lineup. The vehicle failed to meet the company’s sales expectations due to non-competitive pricing and other issues.

According to the automotive mass media, only around 16,700 trucks were sold in Europe, SAR and Australia combined. To put things into perspective, Ford sold 50,900 Ranger pickups in Europe in 2018 alone.

The higher-than-average price is likely not the only factor to blame for the low demand. The company had to recall multiple batches due to various detected problems and production defects.

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class is basically molded after the Nissan Navara and is being produced in Spain. Its engine palette includes Renault-Nissan diesels, as well as Mercedes’ own turbo diesel rated at 258 hp (192 kW) and 550 Nm (406 pound-feet) of torque. The drive can be on-demand or permanent 4WD, and the transmission can be manual or 7-G DCT.
