Mercedes-Benz taking the axe to C- and E-Class coupes

Motor1 believes that this year will see the introduction of a new Mercedes-Benz CLE-Class coming to send the C- and E-Class coupes and convertibles to permanent retirement.

Apparently, the manufacturer has already been informing dealerships about the upcoming model range revision. The demand for coupes and droptops is still on the decline, making two expensive facelifts hard to justify. Introducing the CLE would be more resource-efficient.

On the other hand, sources are reporting that Mercedes has no intention to phase out its less popular cars in favor of crossovers and SUVs. The CLE-Class coupe and convertible are expected to debut and go into production later this year, starting with the soft-top version.

At first, the CLE will likely only be available with a hybrid powertrain based on a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. More powerful AMG hybrids should follow later on.

The latest C-Class may also donate some of its engines for the cause. For instance, the Mercedes-AMG C 43 comes equipped with a mild-hybrid powertrain based on a 2.0-liter turbo-four mill rated at 408 PS (402 hp / 300 kW). The C 63 has already been announced with the same engine boosted to 470 PS (464 hp / 346 kW) and assisted by an electric motor for a hybrid output of 670 PS (661 hp / 493 kW). All of these options may make it into the new CLE-Class as well.
