Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX beats itself at its own game with 1,200+ km of range

Mercedes-Benz has reported another battery range record for its Vision EQXX. The high-tech prototype managed to cover 1,202 kilometers (747 miles) on a single charge, surpassing its previous top score by nearly 200 km (124 miles) driven in a normal way on normal roads.

In April this year, the sedan covered the distance of 1,008 km (626 miles) from Stuttgart, Germany to Cassis, southeastern France, in 11 hours 32 minutes. It spent 8.7 kilowatt-hours of power per 100 kilometers on average and still had 140 kilometers (87 miles) worth of energy left at its destination point.

The test crew now sent it from Stuttgart to the Silverstone Circuit in the UK. The trip took 14 and a half hours and was made difficult due to heavy traffic and hot weather. The driver had used an air conditioner for almost eight hours, but still managed to make it to the destination. The average spending was remarkably low at 8.3 kWh per 100 km.

Upon arriving at Silverstone, the car made 11 laps (around 65 km / 40 miles) on the racetrack, bringing the total mileage to the 1,202 km mentioned above. It also accelerated to a top speed of 140 km/h (87 mph) at the circuit.

The EQXX concept debuted at the beginning of the year (see video). Mercedes-Benz believes it to be the most power-efficient electric vehicle in history. Packing a 100-kWh traction battery and a single motor rated at 245 PS (242 hp / 180 kW), the car is a pure design study and will not be mass produced. Having said that, the automaker expects to use the data obtained during tests for its future releases.
