Video: 1978MY fire truck gets retrofitted into an off-road camper

This Mercedes truck oozes retro vibes and traces its history back to 1978, when it was still working as a fire engine. 20 years later, its new owner reckoned it would be of more use to them as a camper.

The results speak for themselves: the vehicle made it through the Sahara Desert and traveled though Uruguay and Peru, among other picturesque and remote places. Its sandy beige livery is adorned with the German flag ornaments, leading to some misunderstanding from people mistaking it for a military car. A giant snorkel rising from the passenger’s side of the hood ensures that deep water is not an issue, and a repair kit along with some board resides in the back to help get out of sand traps and other sticky situations.

Numerous maps and keepsakes decorate the interior, reminding the residents about their many travels. There is also a full-fledged bookshelf, two single beds, a rudimentary kitchen and even a shower cabin. All of the above is perhaps better off seen in person, though, and the four-minute-long video does a good job highlighting the most interesting bits.
