A car made in 1894 gets street-legal permission in Germany

The Benz Victoria No. 99, a motorized carriage manufactured 129 years ago, has passed technical inspection in Germany and will now remain road-legal in that country for the next two years.

For the record, the Benz Victoria No. 99 is the world’s oldest car with a license right now. Despite having the papers, the owner keeps it in a museum in the town of Einbeck.

For a number of reasons, the Victoria is only drivable in daylight: it has candles for headlamps and flags for turn indicators. A peek under the hood reveals a modest three-liter internal combustion engine extracting six horsepower from its sole cylinder. The top speed never exceeds 27 km/h (17 mph).
