Video: This is how Mercedes-AMG hand-builds its famous engines

As you may have heard, Mercedes-AMG continues to stick to its principle: “One person, one engine”. It means that there is always a single factory worker who is personally responsible for putting your engine together. YouTuber Frame has filmed the process at the automaker’s Affalterbach factory – take a look.

The Affalterbach engine assembly complex maxes four- and eight-cylinder mills for various AMG cars, as well as for the company’s partners. This includes Aston Martin (V8) and Pagani (V12). Every V8 consists of around 600 parts and takes 4-5 hours to put together. Once finished, it geta adorned with the nameplate of the worker responsible for the job.

The employees use special equipment that lets them move around heavy parts easily and rotate cylinder housings however they need. That, and they use modern smart tools like hydraulic torque wrenches to ensure that every bolt is tightened up perfectly – not too loose, not too tight.

The video focuses on assembling the cylinder block, attaching an exhaust manifold, putting on the cylinder head, adding turbocharger parts and so on. The result is then tested on a dyno machine.
