Mercedes-Benz to reduce model count, introduce new Entry Luxury line

Mercedes-Benz will be showing us a prototype of an all-new, next-generation compact car, Automotive News reports citing executives of the company. The vehicle will later distill into a whole lineup called Entry Luxury, which will be less populated than the current A-Class.

The first image of the actual car surfaced last spring. It was a compact-sized saloon designed by AMG Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener.

The Mercedes-Benz development strategy for the next few years implies focusing on high-margin vehicle sales. Affordable cars don’t qualify as such, but the company says it will not abandon the entry-level market completely – instead, it will just reduce the number of available models. This might mean that there will be fewer A- and B-Class models to choose from in their respective new generations. As for the Entry Luxury lineup, it will likely only consist of GLA and GLB SUVs, as well as two CLA options.

It is official that these new cars will be based on the MMA platform supporting electric drivetrains. They will also benefit from upgraded software and certain design features borrowed from the EQXX Concept. The first production model will be a saloon scheduled for launch in 2024.
