Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series becomes the new F1 safety car

The Bahrain stage of the 2022 Formula One Championship kicks off next weekend, and Mercedes is sending its own AMG GT Black Series safety car there to assist the Aston Martin Vantage and DBX pace cars introduced last season.

Mercedes claims the vehicle is nearly entirely stock with only some safety car-specific additions. These include a LED light bar above the windshield and taillights integrated in the rear spoiler.

The flashing lights operate in two modes: orange for “do not overtake” or green for “overtaking OK”. The same color coding extends to the backlight of the car number. Operators can adjust brightness depending on weather conditions and visibility.

Found inside is a roll cage and a couple of tablet screens on the dashboard to keep track of the race. A twin-turbo V8 under the hood sends its usual 730 PS (720 hp / 537 kW) to the wheels.
