Mercedes may keep the V8 past 2030, but there’s a caveat

In summer 2021, Mercedes-Benz asserted its commitment to go all-electric by 2030 in all countries where the market and the infrastructure allow the switch. See the catch already?

In essence, this means that gas-powered Mercedes cars will continue to be available in many regions where they will be the most viable. Furthermore, not all of them will stick to using state-of-the-art four- and six-cylinder engines, either. A representative of the company actually confirmed the V8 wouldn’t be going anywhere well past 2030.

Speaking in a recent interview with CarSales, one of the executives emphasized that the V8 was there to stay. Granted, the engineering crew would need to continue to look for means to eliminate harmful emissions. But the decisive factor would still be the actual market demand: as long as there’s a demand for V8-powered cars in developing markets, that engine will continue to compete with the others.

Moreover, while the V8 is still not explicitly banned in most countries, it will find its way into future generations as well, including the second-gen AMG GT (shown in the gallery and the video).
