2nd-gen Mercedes-AMG GT lands with 4-seat option, brushed-up exterior

Mercedes-AMG has taken the wraps off the second generation of its GT model.

The car is 4,728 mm (184.7 inches) long, 1,984 mm (77.5 in) wide and 1,354 mm (52.9 in) tall with 2,700 mm (105.5 in) between the axles. The interior looks more or less like that of the new SL Roadster, but the exterior details and the headlights in particular are new.

Active aerodynamic parts are included in all trim levels including the basic one. By default, the car is a two-seater, but four seats are available as a paid option. Do note that the back row is for passengers under 1.5 meters (4’11”) tall, though.

The entry-level Mercedes-AMG GT 53 4Matic+ comes equipped with a 4.0-liter turbo V8 that gives it 476 PS (469 hp / 350 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. Opting for the GT 63 4Matic+ flagship spec gives you 585 PS (577 hp / 430 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) from the same block.

An AMG Speedshift MCT nine-speed automatic transmission delivers the torque to the wheels in both cases. Unlike the first generation, which relied on a hydraulic converter, the new transmission utilizes a wet multi-plate clutch.

The AWD system connects the front axle through a multi-plate coupling and has an electronic rear diff lock. The AMG GT 53 reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and maxes out at 295 km/h (183 mph). The AMG GT 63 can do 3.2 seconds and 315 km/h (195 mph), respectively.

Both modifications have four-wheel steering, but the GT 63 additionally benefits from AMG Active Ride Control. Among other things, it lets you lift the front axle to drive over speed bumps. The car can even memorize these bumps on known routes to automate the process.
