History’s fastest Mercedes-AMG breaks cover with 816 PS, 2.8s launch

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the flagship GT model in the current generation. Called the GT 63 S E Performance, it is touted as the marque’s fastest mass-produced vehicle ever with a sprint time of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 320 km/h (199 mph).

The powertrain combines a 4.0-liter V8 mounted at the front end with a single electric motor at the rear axle, which delivers 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels through a two-speed reducer. The main engine supplies 612 PS (603 hp / 450 kW) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque. The total amounts to 816 PS (805 hp / 600 kW) and 1,420 Nm (1,047 lb-ft).

The traction battery is an AMG High Performance model rated at a low 6.1 kWh. When fully charged, it can take you 13 km (8 miles) in all-electric mode, but that’s it. Drivers get four regenerative modes to switch between using a dedicated button on the steering wheel.

A nine-speed automatic transmission sends the power to all four wheels with 4WS and AMG Active Ride Control included in the base spec. The car also wears aerodynamic parts all around and takes advantage of carbon-ceramic brakes. The wheels are sized 20 inches in diameter by default, but a bigger 21-inch set is also available.

AMG Dynamic Select now offers additional drive presets exclusive to hybrids. The MBUX infotainment system stays the same on the hardware side of things, but sports overhauled graphics. On the outside, hybrid badging and a charging port at the rear end are the only things that can help you tell the 63 S E Performance from the rest of the AMG GT lineup.
